Dilmah Breakfast Tea

It is so nice to discover a new tea, especially one that is un-bagged.  On a walk through the Park Slope neighborhood of Brooklyn, we came across PS Coffee, Tea N Spices General Store, a tea, coffee, and spices vendor.  After ogling the tea offerings, we selected an oolong and a canister of Dilmah Breakfast Tea Loose Leaf Tea.

Short steep

Dilmah Breakfast Tea is single-origin Ceylon tea grown in Sri Lanka. Dilmah was founded in 1988 by Merrill J. Fernando and named for his two sons, Dilnah and Malik. Dilmah is "the world's first fully integrated family tea company" meaning there are no middlemen; the company grows its tea, packages its tea, and markets it worldwide. The company claims a fair trade tea which it describes as "earnings from Dilmah remain in Sri Lanka, are shared with our workers and the community, and are reinvested to help make tea a sustainable crop."

Proper steep

Something to note: the pamphlet that is included in the tea canister recommends that black tea should be drunk without milk and sugar "to maximize benefits" of thearubigin and theaflavin compounds. However, an image of the canister pictures a cup of tea to which milk has clearly been added!  The steeped tea does have a "rich red brown mahogany colour."  I liked the taste; reminded of good "English" tea.
